Sleepsafe Selby is a small non-profit charity based in Selby, North Yorkshire, which provides temporary accommodation and practical support to rough sleepers. We support local rough sleepers and vulnerable adults to overcome issues which make them susceptible to homelessness and try to break the cycle of rough sleeping.
We aim to support local rough sleepers in overcoming the challenges that prevent them from maintaining safe and secure housing, including mental and physical health issues, substance misuse, unemployment, and financial difficulties. We provide a happy, friendly environment where people can access crucial support and flourish, helping them move towards independent living and stability. Long-term, our goal is to break the cycle of homelessness and rough sleeping in Selby and the surrounding areas.
We provide crucial practical support to individuals experiencing homelessness and vulnerabilities, helping them build essential life skills and providing temporary accommodation. Our temporary accommodation currently holds 10 individuals, including our emergency shelter room - these rooms are equipped with the essentials: A bed, storage drawers, a tv and entertainment stick, central heating and a fan. Alongside this, residents have use of two toilets, a shower block, two kitchens, lounge and outdoor seating facilities along the canal.
Accommodating 10 people at a time to move on into independent living.
To break the cycle of homelessness and rough sleeping.
Established in December 2018, Sleepsafe Selby was created to support rough sleepers and people susceptible to homelessness, helping them overcome complex issues which may lead people into a cycle of rough sleeping, and accommodating them in our temporary rooms.
We strongly believe that a happy family atmosphere and consistent daily routine is fundamental to recovery and rehabilitation, so we make sure people are included socially within the accommodation and are supported to rebuild confidence and independence.
Sleepsafe Selby provides a safe, supported environment where people can learn essential life skills to improve their chances of a successful tenancy when permanent accommodation is found.
Homeless individuals can seek assistance with the local authorities to find accommodation, however this often takes some time, meaning individuals remain homeless for this period. We guide individuals through the process of homelessness, signposting them to appropriate support channels and assisting them with pathways to finding accommodation. Sleepsafe Selby works alongside North Yorkshire Council and other local organisations to ensure people receive the correct and appropriate support.
Our staff have a range of lived experience relating to the circumstances individuals we support face. We believe this lived experience is imperative to providing great service, as we can truly relate to the struggles of the individuals we support, enabling us to bring empathy, understanding and real practical insight to our work. We operate a ‘Trauma-Informed’ approach when working with individuals experiencing homelessness and vulnerabilities, ensuring their support is individually tailored for their needs.
I stayed at Sleepsafe Selby last year when I became homeless. The Staff were all really kind and helped me to get a birth certificate and open a bank account . When I got my own place they helped me move in and gave me some furniture and even a TV .
I have stayed in a few different homeless places but none like Sleepsafe . It is really homely and they made me feel really welcome when I moved in . I have been able to focus on my recovery and they have all supported me with it without any judgment.
Sleepsafe Selby is brilliant. This is the best I have felt in a long time , the Staff really go above and beyond to help us move on , they are kind but not afraid to give us a telling off if we need one 😉 They never hold a grudge or judge us though.
